Here’s a wonderful, velveteen Chad Valley Bonzo dog c.1920s/30s (no ID). He’s all original, except for his collar and tag, and stands 30 cms (12″) tall on card-lined feet. Stuffed with kapok, The Bonz, as he calls himself, has airbrushed features and a cheeky red felt tongue. This has made his nose looked rather more pink in my pics than in real life.
The Bonz has a full set of claws and, apart from the top seam of one of his arms having been resewn in the past, he’s in fab condition with minimal wear to his velvet plush. Wearing his posh red collar with a gold-tone diamante buckle, plus handmade Bonz name tag, he’s a cracking character and daft as a dog!
For those old enough to remember, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band obviously named themselves after this toy character. The band was formed by a group of students in the 1960s, and combined elements of music, trad jazz and psychedelic pop, with surreal humour and avant garde art. They sprang to fame appearing on the ITV comedy show ‘Do Not Adjust Your Set’, and probably their most well-know hit was ‘I’m the Urban Spaceman’. Thanks for looking. (The drum is a prop only and not included in the listing). Please note, I won’t be re-listing.
